چکیده

Analytical techniques are used to solve two inverse radiative-transfer problems, for a 5nite plane-parallel medium, that are (i) based on the binomial scattering law and (ii) based on the Henyey–Greenstein scattering law. In addition, previously reported analytical results (valid for isotropic scattering) that yield an analytical inverse solution for the unknown optical thickness of the medium are extended to the case of anisotropic scattering. The algorithms for the inversions are veri5ed numerically, and some e8ects of noise on the simulated experimental data are observed. ? 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

On the limitation of using asymmetry factor for radiative transfer involving cirrus clouds

We investigate the limitation of using the asymmetry factor through the Henyey-Greenstein function in representing the scattering phase function for radiative transfer in ice clouds containing hexagonal ice crystals. Relative accuracy checks for solar fluxes are carried out using three cirrus cloud size distributions. The flux results computed from the Henyey-Greenstein phase function, based on...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On Aerosol Direct Shortwave Forcing and the Henyey–Greenstein Phase Function

This technical note extends previous Mie calculations to show that there are complex relationships between the asymmetry parameter g and the upscatter fractions for monodirectional incident radiation b(m0). Except for intermediate zenith angles and for the upscatter fraction for diffuse radiation, there are significant differences between b(m0) predicted by the Mie theory and that approximated ...

Identification of radiative characteristics of fused quartz containing bubbles using discrete ordinates method with Fresnel interfaces

Radiation characteristics of fused quartz containing bubbles (10 % porosity) are determined using inverse method based on theoretical and experimental bi-directional transmittances and reflectances. The Discrete Ordinates Method is used to solve the RTE. The internal and external interfaces are assumed to be optically smooth. The importance of the choice of the interpolation law has been shown,...

Parameterization of the Aerosol Upscatter Fraction as Function of the Backscatter Fraction and Their Relationships to the Asymmetry Parameter for Radiative Transfer Calculations

Simple analytical approximations for aerosol radiative forcing generally contain the aerosol upscatter fraction (the fraction of scattered light that is scattered into the upper hemisphere), while ambient measurements generally yield the backscatter fraction, and theoretical calculations of scattering phase functions often yield the asymmetry parameter. Therefore, simple analytical relationship...

Ramsauer approach for light scattering on nonabsorbing spherical particles and application to the Henyey-Greenstein phase function.

We present a new method to study light scattering on nonabsorbing spherical particles. This method is based on the Ramsauer approach, a model known in atomic and nuclear physics. Its main advantage is its intuitive understanding of the underlying physics phenomena. We show that although the approximations are numerous, the Ramsauer analytical solutions describe fairly well the scattering phase ...
